I stopped here during the RAGNAR race. I was extremely hungry so naturally I decided to order the Cardiac Arrest. A double bacon cheeseburger with smashed between two grilled cheese sandwiches....and fried onions on top. It tasted pretty much as you would imagine, cheesy and delicious. The environment is very laid back and this would be a great place for parties. The service was friendly and fast. It was worth the stop!

I am surprised to see the bad reviews on Carps. I have always had good food and service here. Carps has a very extensive menu, so it's not too hard to find something to tempt your tastebuds. I am a big fan of the Rueben and the Mediterranean salad. But a real treat is some of the homemade soups that Carp makes. I don't know where he gets some of those soup ideas because many I have never had elsewhere -- but there are definitely unique and tasty!

Talk about a rollercoaster ride. We stopped-in to Carp's for a post "worked on the car and did a bunch of other odd jobs" beer and bite to eat. We arrived at around 8:00pm; the place was mostly empty. We were stopped by the bartender, who was outside, smoking and talking on a phone. He covered the phone with his hand and asked, "You guys eating or drinking?" We said, "Both." He said, "Make it quick - we're closing." Hmm. Another server stopped by with menus and took our drink orders (two tap beers and a diet Pepsi), then told us they were getting ready to close, and that we should get our orders in quickly. We ordered: one dozen of the BBQ chicken wings, a brisket pizza-like thing, and a side of fries. The bartender came in from his smoke/phone break, poured our beers (no handwash - a no-no), and asked if we had ordered. We told him we did. He then picked-up the phone and went outside again to smoke and talk some more. The food arrived quickly; the wings were just plain chicken wings sitting in a bowl with a puddle of sauce in the bottom. Not tossed, not dressed, just left to sit in a pool of goo. They were *extremely* salty - like ridiculously salty. The bowl that held the wings and sauce pile was lined with a paper wrapper, so we couldn't easily toss the wings in the sauce to coat them... frustration-city. The brisket pizza-thing was a deep-fried tortillia that was covered in thick slabs of shredded brisket, BBQ sauce, and cheddar cheese. It was pretty decent, but like the wings, extremely salty - it was like they dipped each component in salt; even the "crust" was salty. The fries were - wait for it - extremely salty and cold. They must have been sitting out for a bit. The bartender came back in from his smoke/phone break, asked if we needed anything, and then started shutting off the radio, lights, and other accessories. There was one other guy sitting at the bar, and he didn't seem to notice or care. I believe he was talking with the owner. I woke-up this morning feeling like I'd spent the night in a pickling jar. Everything was sooooo salty, and my bloated body shows it. In hindsight, I wish they could be more consistent; I wish the bartender hadn't been outside smoking and talking on the phone the entire time; I wish we hadn't been rushed out of the place by 9:15pm; I wish I hadn't ingested 8-lbs of salt; I wish I'd have gone elsewhere for dinner and drinks. Which is a shame, because this place has character, an interesting menu, and a ton of potential. When they're "on" - they're ON. The food has been excellent during some visits. It just needs to remain "ON."

Overpriced, abrupt waitstaff, and no flavoring in their food except excessive amounts of salt...we now go to TT's next door for affordable, friendly bar experience.

Delicious food, great service! We dined at Carp's last weekend and we're thrilled with everything! Cobb salad was perfect, nachos were awesome and even though it was almost a full house, we were served in a timely manner, much appreciated!

We popped in here to grab some grub (anything other than interstate fast food) and to take a break from driving. We'd never heard of Carp's Landing beyond the Yelp reviews but we had heard of Lake Mills before, primarily due to their delicious beers from Tyranena Brewery. I had the smoked brisket sandwich because that's apparently one of their specialties. I liked it. The sandwich was large and filling and came on a crusty (in a good way) French roll. The brisket was cut a little thicker than in most places, which I enjoyed, because it wasn't tiny sheets of brisket, it was more of the chunky variety. The KC BBQ sauce was tasty and the sandwich was solidly built. I got the 'Texas wedges' as a side and those were quite odd. I received about four hearty steak fries with some Italian seasoning on them. They were fine and I didn't really need a large side with my big ol' sandwich, but the wedges were decidedly bizarre. The meal also came with a little black-bean salad type of thing, which was a nice little freebie. At $7.25 for the food (without drink), I can't really complain about anything. The food was good enough and certainly affordable. We sat in the restaurant area where there were some older guys playing cards and it was a chilled-out afternoon vibe. The place is pretty expansive and it looks like it'd be a fun place to pound some beers at night or during a game. Overall, Carp's is a pretty good spot. If ever I go back to Lake Mills I would eat at some other local establishment, but only because of the opportunity.

Surprised by the negative reviews. We stop here anytime coming or going anywhere west if Madison. Their BBQ is really good and Cabo Wabo margarita is a great deal at $6! The Cowboy Beans are a must, in fact we've taken this idea home and it has become our own. Portions are big and we haven't had a bad meal after 4-5 visits. Small town pace and personality.

We had a terrible experience at this restaurant and I would really not recommend this place to anyone! I came here as part of a party of 6 so I get that it's a larger party but I've been a server before and the customer service (or lack thereof) at this restaurant was inexcusable. First of all it took a good 10-15 minutes for our waiter to even come by and bring us water or menus so it didn't start well. The hot food on the buffet looked gross so we all ordered from the menu instead. Not even exaggerating I think we must've waited a good 45 minutes for our food and 3 of the 6 dishes had gotten either mixed up or were missed entirely! That and 2 of the members of our party who actually got their meal had ordered lettuce wraps which consisted of a plate containing a bowl of what looked like chop suey with wilted lettuce leaves on the side - GROSS. Our waiter didn't even seem to care much; he just said that the kitchen was really busy and kind of shrugged his shoulders. Umm really?! If I had committed such a cardinal sin as making my table wait an HOUR from the time they got in to the time they got their meals AND I had screwed up half of the orders I'd like to think I'd be more apologetic AND involve a manager to figure out how to diffuse the situation. To top things off, when we received the bill it was all wrong and still listed all of the meals that we had never gotten. You can be sure our waiter didn't have any trouble adding the gratuity to the bill automatically either. At this point we had been in the restuarant for TWO HOURS so we crossed off the items we didn't receive, recalculated the tip as a percentage of our actual bill -which I think is VERY generous considering our service was AWFUL- and just paid cash so we could get out of there. I don't think I've ever had such a bad dining experience from beginning to end in my life. I would never come back here.

I'll give this place 2.5 starts. Overall, this is probably one of the better places to eat in the town of Lake Mills. The food was ok. I ordered the shrimp and expected it to be fresh but instead it was deep fried. I definitely wouldn't have ordered this if I had known it was deep fried. When I asked the server about the shrimp her response was "I really don't know what you ordered". I would like to add this was not our original server. Our first server was very nice but our second one had a tone to her. Her response made me want to go to the golf course down the road. The server's were pretty busy and I could tell they were understaffed. However, we didn't get checked on and our waters were never refilled. Even though I wasn't impressed with the service I am going to give this place another chance.

I honestly didn't like anything about this place. Granted, there wasn't a whole lot to choose from in this little town, but I thought their food was kind of a joke. We ordered cheese sticks as an appetizer. It turned out that these were fried breadsticks with a sprinkling of shredded cheese on top, served with a cold cup of marinara sauce. Then we tried the salad bar, and while some things looked like they would be okay, I didn't enjoy anything I put on my plate. The potato salad was a struggle to swallow. Finally, after a rather long wait, my entree came (I got the brisket sandwich because they claim to have a really good one). The brisket tasted okay, but there was a ton of gristle and fat that I only ate about a third of it. Considering how laughable the meal was, I was surprised at their prices. I would never return here. If you're looking for a restaurant that is actually trying, go to the Mexican place around the block.

a cute bar in a well restored building that tries to be a restaurant. We tried their Sunday brunch and it was nothing but a few luke warm items in chafing dishes without any heat source. Other items were tasty, but over priced for the quality and amounts served. We tried to order many items and three times the server returned to tell us "we are out of this and that." There were two other tables of people and maybe 5 people at the bar when it has just opened, so clearly uninformed, inexperienced servers. Service was very slow - approximately 20 minutes to get appetizers for three, another 30 minutes for entrees....and so it goes, slow and while good tasting, not worthy of the prices charged and the waiting time. The purpose of menus is to list what is available, not what is lacking in the kitchen. A bad enough experience to not return

I had heard good things about this place. The service was poor, it took the waiter about 20 minutes to acknowledge we were even there. After placing our drink order the waiter asked us if we wanted to order, we decided to order the nacho appetizer. The waiter asked if we would like a protein (chicken, beef, or brisket), he informed us that they were known for their brisket and recommended it. We accepted his recommendation, just because you're known for it doesn't mean its good. I should have known better, I smelled no smoke upon walking in to the establishment. The brisket was horrible, bland, tasteless, tough, and no smoke flavor. The reason we had gone here was for a Friday fish fry. I ordered the perch and was further disappointed, the breading was poorly seasoned and I thought the portion small for the price. The meal came with a salad bar that I was assured was worth the trip to the other dinning room (we were placed in a room to the rear of the establishment, the salad bar was in the front room). The salad bar was disappointing as well. It was nothing more then iceberg lettuce, some shredded carrots and cheese, onions, and croutons. Not at all the "many good things" we were promised. My girlfriend ordered the cod and said it wasn't bad. The place did have a good atmosphere, and the it was busy. I just found my visit to be very disappointing and I will be unlikely to return for just the food. If you are looking for a fish fry, don't bother here, there are other places that will deliver a better meal.

Carp's was a happy surprise. We wanted to watch the Packer game, and we wanted to do so at a place that had traditional bar food but with quality to boot. Thanks to a review by Christina L.--who's foodie opinion all should trust--we decided on Carp's. The place was nearly packed when we walked in, but there was a lone table at the back part of the bar. They showed us there, and we still had a view of game. The bartender forewarned us that food delivery may take longer than usual, thanks to the bar crowd appearing at the same time. We were okay with the wait, seeing there had to be reason why everyone was there. Not every bar showing a Packer game has a full house. The hostess brought us drinks while we waited, and the server appeared not too long after. My hubby and I decided to share the grande tavern nachos with chicken and the pork quesadillas. My sister ordered the panini chicken artichoke melt with the Texas wedges. The wait was probably a good 25 minutes, but we passed the time with crossword puzzles and watching the game. No dining experience should be rushed anyway. The food ended up being well worth the wait. You could see the quality of the ingredients and the fresh preparation. I half expected the "norm" pork quesadillas, where they are sathered in some unidentified sauce. Not at Carp's. The pork was tender and juicy with a crispy skin. It was pulled, not shredded, so the pieces were large and didn't get lost in the cheese. There was not only your standard cheese filler either. There were green peppers and white onion. The veggies were al dente too, not cooked to rubbery oblivion. The nachos were just as stellar with tasty cubes of white chicken breast, white onion, green pepper, cheddar cheese, and a side of sour cream and jalapenos. Special note goes to the side of pico on the quesadilla plate, as well as the rice. Both were far above average. The pico was zesty and refreshing, adding a nice balanced kick to the quesadilla. The rice. The rice. All Mexican restaurants, and I do not exaggerate when I say "all," should get the rice recipe from Carp's kitchen. It had flavor! It was spicy, fluffy, and delicious. Definitely not run of the mill. My sister's sandwich and wedges were not standard either. The wedges were oversized, had crispy-herbed skins, and were the right portion to go with the sandwich. I know you can never have too many carbs, but the fries didn't overwhelm the plate or the diner. On the sandwich, you could see enormous chunks of artichoke and thick slabs of chicken breast meat glued together with gooey cheese between toasted bread. Not shabby for afternoon football game grub. I may not get back to Carp's on a regular basis, but I will try to drop in when I'm in their neck of the woods. Who knew that Lake Mills had so many hidden food gems? Do not underestimate the small town.

You are better off just sticking to the drinks. The cooks should be ashamed of themselves, go back to culinary school. Carp's should step up their game. Great place and location. But the food is mediocre. Ps their burger bar is horrible.

Had my first experience at Carp's Landing last night. I was meeting a friend and first grabbed a beer at the bar while I waited for her to arrive. The bartender was prompt and friendly. Basic beers on tap, went with a spotted cow. $3.50 for a pint, which I think is fair. We decided to eat at the bar. We split the fried artichokes for an app. The artichokes were good. The dipping sauces were only ok, tasted out of a jar and not homemade. For our dinners we split a veggie version of the reuben which was quite good. In addition to saurkraut, swiss cheese & thousand island dressing, the sandwich also had shredded carrots and not sure what else. I would definitely get this again. Got the texas wedges for the side. They gave us 4, which seemed a little skimpy. Our second sandwich was the Monaco Melt. It was ok, but the flavors didn't really blend together. Maybe it would have been better if it was toasted??? The total for 2 beers, 1 app and 2 sandwiches was about $26. If I was in the area and looking for a place to eat, I would definitely go back to Carp's.

I went to Carps this past Sunday and it wasn't the greatest experience. The service was horrible - it took at least 15mins to get our drinks, our appetizer came out at the same time as our entrees, and we waited for probably a half-hr to get the check. Girlfriend and I were literally calling each other's phones in an attempt to attract attention to our table so we could get out of there already. I would understand if they had been busier but we were literally the only people in the dining room. The food was OK. The artichoke dip was delicious, creamy, rich and flavorful served with garlic bread pieces. I got a salad and it was decent. The portion was massive, the veggies and chicken tasted average, all in all it was ok - pretty standard fare. I tried a bite of Girlfriend's burger and you'd be better of f going to McDonalds if you want a burger I think.

We camp up in Lake Mills a few times every summer now, and Carp's Landing is one of our favorite places! Really good barbecue. Great beer list. Good margaritas. The service is really friendly and they take a lot of pride in their restaurant. The chef smokes all the meat in-house, and you can definitely tell. Great brisket, and I'm not usually a brisket girl. They also make these "cowboy" beans, which seem like a combo of baked beans and refried beans with cheese melted on the top. There is no way they are good for you, but super good none the less. There's a deck out back off the street that is cute and isolated. The bar area is cozy and dark, and there's a big bright room in the back which we haven't sat in yet, but it's very pretty. There aren't too many restaurants in Lake Mills; it's a quiet little town east of Madison. It's nice that the restaurants that are there are quality establishments.

Following a round of golf with my Dad we hit the Carp's Landing in downtown Lake Mills. We were early for lunch on a Friday (~11:15) but surprisingly it never got busy. We both had their featured, and fantastic, 16 hour smoked brisket on an open faced sandwich. Service was outstanding for a bar. We'll be back in short order (though it will probably be after July 1 when the no smoking ban hits).

The food was ok, but what sticks out to me was the poor service by whom I believe was the owner. We walked in mid-afternoon on a weekday and was "greeted" and directed to a table by that guy, who was quite short with us with everything he said. After he just about threw the menus down in front of our faces, he gave us an abrupt "What do you want to drink." Sheesh, can we sit down and gain our bearings first? He also took our order, but a regular server served us the rest of the time. He was fine, but I still can't understand why we would cause the owner to perceive us as a annoyance. We walked out the bar side (after sitting on the restaurant side) and the owner was talking to the bartender and absolutely saw us walking the whole way - not a word of thanks for stopping by or anything of the sort. My girlfriend gave a sarcastic "you're welcome" that I'm not sure was audible as we walked out the door, but it doesn't matter...never again.
